Applied Arts and Sciences, BAAS


Requirements for the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree with a major in Applied Arts and Sciences include the following:

  1. Hours Required and General/College Requirements: A minimum of 120 semester hours, of which 42 must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree.
  2. Major Requirements:

Professional Foundation Requirements: Students are required to complete 9 hours in the Professional Foundation core, including: HSML 3000D *; SOCI 3220D ; and either SOCI 4540D  or SOWK 4540D . Students must earn a grade of C or better for these required courses.

Professional Development Requirements: Students may choose from two options in selection of BAAS concentrations. OPTION 1 requires completion of three interdisciplinary concentrations of courses consisting of 12 hours per concentration. One (12 hours) concentration area must be taken from UNT Dallas. The remaining two concentration areas (24 hours) may come from any other department at UNT or may consist of technical/professional coursework already completed at a community college (or in the military) as part of an associate’s degree. OPTION 2 requires completion of one primary and one secondary interdisciplinary concentration consisting of 36 hours. The secondary concentration must consist of at least 12 hours. One concentration area must be taken from UNT Dallas. The remaining concentration area may come from any other department at UNT or may consist of technical/professional coursework already completed at a community college (or in the military) as part of an associate’s degree.

Occupational Specialization Requirements: The occupational specialization degree component consists of 21 hours of credits from courses related to a specific job or field of study.

Concentration areas consisting of 12 hours can be se1ected from the following disciplines:

  3. Applied Gerontology
  4. Rehabilitation
  5. Sociology
  6. Creative Writing
  7. Dallas Studies
  8. History
  9. Ethnic and Minority Studies
  10. Hospitality Management
  11. Sports and Entertainment Marketing
  12. Communication Studies
  13. Communication & Technology
  14. Psychology
  15. Child Development and Family Studies
  16. Alternative Dispute Resolution

Concentration areas consisting of more than 12 hours can be selected from the following disciplines:

  1. Dallas Studies
  2. Sociology
  3. Hospitality Management
  4. History
  5. Ethnic and Minority Studies
  6. Communication Studies
  7. Communication & Technology
  8. Sports and Entertainment Mar keting
  9. Business
  10. Psychology
  11. Communication Marketing
  12. Alternative Dispute Resolution
  1. GPA Requirements: 2 .0 to qualify for graduation.

*Students may substitute an upper level course from one of their concentr ation areas for this course . Approval i s required.
