Applied Spanish, BA

The Applied Spanish major is designed to meet FOS compliance. The Applied Spanish major, with its emphasis on language usage in the workplace and in society, provides students with a competitive edge in job markets comprised of high percentages of Spanish-speaking populations such as the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Spanish B.A. students can combine their studies with other disciplines to prepare them for twenty-first century career opportunities as they acquire highly marketable skills such as translation, cultural competency, and adaptability to different environments, to name a few. This major prepares students with oral language and literacy skills enabling fluid communication with native speakers within social and professional contexts. Coursework offers opportunities to gain experiential learning through internships, practicum, and service learning. Additionally, students are introduced to Hispanic cultures, literature, the arts, and contemporary sociocultural issues facing Spanish-speaking peoples in the United States and abroad. This well-rounded curriculum gives students a unique edge and also prepares students to enter graduate studies in preparation for teaching, public leadership, social sciences, legal and business careers.

Building Blocks for the Degree

  1. Texas Core Curriculum: All students are required to complete 42 hours of the Texas Core Curriculum to earn a degree.
  2. Major Requirements: The Applied Spanish major requires 27 hours of required courses and 12 hours of Spanish electives.

Core Curriculum Recommendations

UNTD adheres to the Texas Core Curriculum established in Texas Education Code Chapter 61, Subchapter S. Courses designated on the transcript as a Core Foundation Area will be applied to the Texas Core Curriculum. As a new Freshman student starting at UNTD (or transfer student looking ahead to attend UNTD), taking the recommended UNTD courses (or equivalent) can reduce hours to degree and provide more opportunities for elective courses.
